Broadband TV services have been rebranded and merged over the years, but the box in your cabinet still works the same way: broadband brings the on-demand and catch-up services, while a proper rooftop aerial feed brings the live Freeview channels the box relies on for everything else. If that aerial feed is weak, tired, or was never installed to a decent standard, the box will never perform as it should.
The broadband and the aerial are two separate jobs
Broadband engineers fit the router and the box; they do not usually touch the aerial system. If the live TV side of a broadband box has never worked well, the cause is almost always the aerial, the cable run, or a splitter feeding too many rooms from one signal, not the broadband connection itself. We test the aerial feed on its own before touching anything else.
Why these boxes are less forgiving of a poor signal
A broadband TV box processes the live Freeview signal alongside on-demand data, and a marginal aerial feed shows up as pixelation, box reboots or channels that simply refuse to appear, rather than the gentle snow you would see on an older television. We size the aerial and any amplifier to the box's actual requirements, not just to make a picture appear on the day.
Common jobs we are called out for
Most call-outs on these systems fall into a handful of patterns:
- An aerial installed years ago that was never adequate for the property
- A new box added to an existing feed already split between several rooms
- Cable runs added during a broadband install that were not properly terminated
- House moves where the previous owner's aerial does not suit the new box's location
- Intermittent faults that only appear in poor weather

Is this the same as an ordinary Freeview aerial installation?
The aerial itself is standard, but we take account of how a broadband TV box uses the signal, including any splitting across rooms, before deciding on the aerial and any amplification needed. The installation is otherwise the same as any other digital aerial job.
My box keeps rebooting during live TV. Is that the aerial?
It often is. A marginal aerial feed can cause a broadband TV box to lose the live signal and restart, particularly if the feed is also shared with other rooms. We test the feed with a meter to confirm before recommending any work.
Can you add an aerial point for a box in a second bedroom?
Yes, this is a common request when a household adds a second box. We run a new cable from the aerial or from a distribution amplifier, and check the signal at the new point rather than assuming a simple splitter will do.
Do you deal with the broadband provider on our behalf?
No, we work on the aerial and cabling only. If the fault turns out to be with the broadband connection or the box itself, we will tell you plainly so you can raise it with the provider.
We are moving house and inheriting an aerial system. Can you check it?
Yes, a pre-move or post-move survey is straightforward to arrange. We will tell you honestly whether the existing aerial and cabling are suitable for a broadband TV box or whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
