Sky's line-up now spans a dish-fed Sky Q box, the built-in Sky Glass television and the streaming-only Sky Stream puck, and each one has its own quirks when it comes to wiring, wifi and dish requirements. We set up and troubleshoot all three across Oxford, Witney, Thame and the surrounding villages, working independently of Sky rather than as part of their own engineer network.
Three boxes, three very different jobs
Sky Q relies on a wideband LNB and a dish aligned to 28.2°E, plus coaxial wiring to every mini box in the house. Sky Glass is a television with the Sky platform built in, so there is no dish at all, but it needs a strong, stable broadband connection and a sensible position for the soundbar and cabling. Sky Stream sits in between: no dish, but a small puck that also depends entirely on wifi.
Because the three systems have such different requirements, a job that looks simple on the phone can turn out to need a dish upgrade, a new cable run, or a wifi improvement before the picture is reliable. We assess the actual property rather than assuming one system is a drop-in replacement for another.
Independent of Sky, and clear about what that means
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by Sky. We install, wire and align the equipment, and we are often the option people call when Sky's own process has quoted a long wait, declined an awkward roof, or simply isn't available for the exact job needed. We are not able to activate viewing cards, manage subscriptions or resolve account issues, all of which remain matters for Sky directly.
Mini boxes and whole-home wiring
Sky Q multi-room setups need either a wired coaxial feed to each mini box or a reliable wifi connection, and mixing the two badly is a common cause of buffering and dropouts. We plan the wiring route through lofts, under floors or along skirting so that additional televisions in bedrooms, kitchens and snugs get a stable feed rather than a hopeful one.
- New coaxial runs for mini boxes in extensions and converted rooms
- Wifi surveys where a wired run genuinely isn't practical
- Tidying existing cabling left by a previous installer
- Combining Sky Q with other services on the same wall plate
Moving house or upgrading from an older Sky box
If you are moving into a property with an old Sky+ or first-generation Sky Q dish, it often needs a new LNB or a full dish swap before the current boxes will work properly. We check the existing dish rather than assuming it's suitable, since a mismatched LNB is one of the most common causes of a Sky Q box that won't complete setup.
Sky Glass and Sky Stream broadband requirements
Because Sky Glass and Sky Stream stream everything over broadband, a weak wifi signal in the room where the television sits will show up as buffering, dropped resolution or the picture freezing during peak evening hours. We can advise on router placement, extenders or a wired ethernet run to the television, which is often the more reliable fix in older stone-built houses with thick internal walls.

Oxford Aerial Solutions is independent, so the advice you get is about your property rather than a provider's product list.

Are you affiliated with Sky?
No. We are an independent aerial and satellite company. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by Sky, and we book, price and carry out our work directly with customers.
Do I need a dish for Sky Glass or Sky Stream?
No. Both rely entirely on your home broadband rather than a satellite dish, so the important factor for a good picture is a strong, stable wifi or wired connection in the room the television sits in.
My old dish won't work with a new Sky Q box, why not?
Sky Q needs a wideband LNB, which older Sky and Sky+ dishes usually don't have. We can fit a compatible LNB or replace the dish entirely, whichever is more sensible for the property.
Can you wire in mini boxes for extra rooms?
Yes, we run new coaxial cabling to mini boxes in extensions, bedrooms and converted spaces, and we can advise honestly on whether wifi is a better option for a particular room.
Can you sort out my Sky subscription or viewing card?
No, those remain matters for Sky directly, as we have no access to account or billing systems. We handle the physical dish, box, wiring and wifi side of things.
Do you cover villages outside Oxford itself?
Yes, we regularly work in Witney, Chipping Norton, Burford, Thame, Newbury and High Wycombe as well as Oxford itself, and across the wider three-county area.
