Blocks of flats, shared houses, colleges, care homes, pubs and holiday lets all need television distribution that keeps working when one tenant, one room or one television changes. We design and install communal aerial and satellite systems, and we maintain existing IRS systems that have started to let individual flats down.

Why communal systems fail one flat at a time

A communal distribution network splits one aerial or satellite feed between many outlets, and every join, splitter and length of cable in that chain reduces the signal a little further. In an older building, decades of ad-hoc extensions and repairs often mean the flat furthest from the head-end is starved of signal long before anyone thinks to check the equipment on the roof.

We survey the whole chain, from the aerial or dish down to the individual outlet, and identify where signal is being lost rather than simply adding another amplifier to mask the symptom.

Properties we regularly work in

This work makes up a steady part of what we do, across a range of building types:

  • Purpose-built and converted blocks of flats
  • Shared student houses and licensed HMOs
  • Care homes and sheltered housing schemes
  • Colleges and student accommodation
  • Pubs, hotels and holiday lets with several televisions
  • Offices and other commercial premises

IRS systems and satellite distribution

Where a building takes a shared satellite feed rather than an aerial, we work with integrated reception systems (IRS), which distribute several satellite positions to individual flats through a single wiring network. These systems need careful design to give each flat a full choice of channels, and careful maintenance so a fault in one riser does not affect the whole building.

Ongoing maintenance for landlords and managing agents

For managing agents and landlords, we can carry out periodic checks of communal systems, respond to individual flat faults, and advise on whether an ageing system is worth repairing or replacing. Reports are written in plain terms, without pushing for work that is not needed.

Questions we are asked about this work

Can you survey an existing communal system without disrupting residents?

Yes, most surveys can be carried out from communal risers, roof spaces and outlet points without needing access to every flat. Where we do need access to a particular unit, we will let you know in advance so it can be arranged with the resident.

One flat has poor reception but the rest of the building is fine. What causes that?

This is usually a fault or excessive signal loss on the specific run of cable feeding that flat, rather than a problem with the shared aerial or dish. We test at the outlet and work back along the cable to find where the loss occurs.

Do you work with managing agents as well as individual landlords?

Yes, we regularly deal directly with managing agents on communal systems, including arranging access and reporting findings to whoever holds responsibility for the building's shared services.

Can a communal system carry Sky, Freesat and Freeview at the same time?

A well-designed IRS system can distribute multiple satellite positions and an aerial feed together, so individual flats can choose their own service. Older systems were not always built with this flexibility, and we can advise on what an upgrade would involve.

Do you fit communal systems in new-build or converted properties?

Yes, we design and install distribution systems for new conversions as well as maintaining existing ones, working from the number of outlets and services required rather than a standard template.
